A guide for root canals from our dentist
When you have had a dental abscess, you will likely be looking for a solution that will prevent you from ever having to experience anything like that again. And we don’t blame you!
But, oddly, most dental patients flinch when they consider the treatment for an infected tooth that is not heavily decayed. And that treatment is an endodontic treatment, which is also known as a root canal.
When you come to see our team at Coptfold Dental, we will always prioritise saving your teeth, and our dentist Brentwood will usually aim to treat any dental infection with a root canal if we can.
So if you have never had a root canal before or simply want to know more about the process, read on to learn more from our dentist Brentwood.
What is a root canal?
A root canal is a simple dental procedure in which our dentist Brentwood removes the damaged or infected pulp (pulp is the soft tissue in the tooth that contains blood vessels and nerves) from the tooth’s chamber and root canals and then seals the canals to prevent further infection. This procedure is typically done to save a tooth that has become infected or inflamed due to deep decay, injury, or trauma. Root canal therapy can relieve pain and help prevent the spread of infection to your other teeth or areas of the body. And it also prevents you from losing a tooth. Great!
How is a root canal performed?
The tooth and surrounding area are numbed with a local anaesthetic to minimise any discomfort during the procedure. If you are a nervous or anxious patient, we can offer you sedation.
A small hole is made in the top of the tooth for access to the pulp chamber, and root canals and the damaged or infected pulp is removed, or part of the pulp will be removed. The canals are then cleaned and disinfected to remove any remaining debris or bacteria. The channels are filled with a rubber-like material called gutta-percha, which is also antibacterial. A temporary filling is then placed in the hole made in the tooth to keep it sealed. And boom, the root canal is completed!
Is there any aftercare?
After a root canal procedure, it is essential to take proper care of the treated tooth to ensure that it heals properly and to reduce the risk of complications.
It is also essential to continue to maintain good oral hygiene habits, including regular brushing and flossing and regular dental check-ups with our team. This will help to prevent further decay or infection in the treated tooth and other teeth.
If you experience severe pain, swelling, or any other unusual symptoms after the procedure, contact our team immediately.
How long does a root canal last?
A root canal procedure is usually a long-lasting treatment, but it depends on several factors such as the type of tooth, the extent of the damage, and the quality of aftercare. With proper care and maintenance, most root canal-treated teeth can last a lifetime.
